What does family planning include?
Family planning visits cover contraception, preconception counseling, and questions about fertility and timing. Your provider reviews your health history to make sure the methods you consider are safe for you.
What birth control options are there?
- Hormonal pills, patches and vaginal rings
- Hormonal and copper IUDs
- The contraceptive implant and injection
- Barrier methods such as condoms and diaphragms
- Permanent options such as tubal sterilization
How do I choose a method?
The right method depends on how well it works, how often you need to think about it, side effects, other health benefits such as lighter periods, and whether you want children in the future. Your provider can explain each option and answer questions.
What if I am planning a pregnancy?
A preconception visit before you try to conceive is a chance to review medications, start a prenatal vitamin with folic acid, update vaccines and manage conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure. If you have been trying to conceive for a year (or six months if you are over 35), your provider can begin an evaluation.
When should I call?
Call the office if you have severe pain, fever or heavy bleeding after an IUD or implant is placed, if you think you may be pregnant while using birth control, or if you have side effects that concern you.
