What is endometrial ablation?
The lining of the uterus (the endometrium) is what sheds during a period. Ablation treats this lining so periods become much lighter or stop. With NovaSure, a slim device is placed through the cervix, a mesh opens to fit the uterus, and radiofrequency energy is delivered for a short time, usually about one to two minutes. No incisions are needed.
Who is a candidate?
Ablation may be an option for women with heavy menstrual bleeding who have finished having children and for whom medication has not worked or is not wanted. It is not appropriate for women who want future pregnancies, are past menopause, or have uterine cancer or certain other conditions. An evaluation, often including a biopsy or hysteroscopy, comes first.
How is it performed?
The procedure is done as an outpatient, with medication or anesthesia for comfort. The whole visit, including preparation, is usually under an hour, and you go home the same day.
What is recovery like?
Most women return to normal activities within a day or two. Cramping, nausea and watery or bloody discharge for a few days to a few weeks are common.
What are the risks and when should I call?
Risks are uncommon but include infection, bleeding and injury to the uterus or nearby organs. Pregnancy after ablation is unlikely but possible and can be dangerous, so reliable birth control or sterilization is needed. Call the office for fever, worsening pain, foul-smelling discharge or heavy bleeding.
